24 Apr Volunteer Appreciation Month
April is Volunteer Appreciation Month!
We are grateful all year long for our outstanding Volunteers and their generous contributions, and during the month of April, we join with organizations nationally to thank them.
Last year, 307 volunteers aged 14-95 donated more than 40 thousand hours to serving our residents, their families and the staff of the Hebrew Home at Riverdale. In a world full of need, we are especially grateful that they choose to share their goodness with us!
Our volunteer team is made up of retired adults wanting to stay active and socialize, civic minded individuals looking for a meaningful way to contribute to their community, family and friends of residents who see the excellent care that their loved ones are receiving and want to give back to show their gratitude, talented individuals and groups wishing to bring joy through music or art, young adults discerning their future career paths, local college students who want to be part of their greater community, and middle and high school students looking for a meaningful summer experience. Also part of our volunteer team are the amazing twelve students in our HOPE Program. This year-long program is designed to provide much needed job, communication, and life skills to these intellectually disabled students (in partnership with the NYC DOE). It has been incredibly successful in building their confidence and preparing students for employment after graduation. And let us not forget our amazing resident volunteers. A growing number of residents are volunteering right here on their own campus. They are members of our Welcome Committee, the popular Community Service Outreach Group, and some are working with our HOPE students as mentors.
Everyone at the Hebrew Home benefits from our incredible volunteer team. Residents receive valuable friendly visits and companionship—adding to the quality of their days and lives; family members of our residents are comforted to know that volunteers are available for their loved ones and our staff benefits from our volunteers who bring their special skills to assist with the many departmental projects that arise.
We are very grateful for all that they do every day and are happy to celebrate them this month and all year long!
We are currently accepting applications for teens 15 years and older for our popular Summer Great Outdoors Program (GO). This program is designed to bring young people and our seniors together on our beautiful campus to enjoy the fresh air and each other.
